The File Hills First Nations Police Service employs sworn police officers as constable/investigators who are accountable to our communities and who understand and respect their cultures. The sworn police officers are deployed in two units located in the band offices of the Okanese and Carry the Kettle First Nations. FHFNPS police officers help ensure public safety and security, investigate crimes and enforce the law.
Some of the duties of a FHFNPS police officer:
Enforce the law
Apprehend criminals
Respond to alarms, disputes and complaints
Conduct patrols by vehicle, by foot or by bicycle
Enforce highway and traffic laws
Conduct investigations
Collect evidence at crime scenes
Interview suspects and witnesses
Investigate accidents and crime scenes
Testify in court
Collect notes and reports
Ensure the safety and security of the public
Respond to emergencies
Provide assistance to victims
Community awareness and relations
*Salary levels for FHFNPS Constables are compatible with other Canadian police services.
Minimum Requirements for Constable Applicants
Must be 19 years of age or older.
Must be of good character.
Must be a Canadian Citizen.
Must have Grade 12 diploma or Grade 12 Equivalent.
Must have a valid driver’s licence without restrictions.
Must be in good physical condition.
Must have a good driving record.
Must have no criminal record and be free from criminal involvement in three (3) preceding years, e.g. thefts, illegal drugs. Recent drug use and/or other criminal activity, either detected or undetected by police, will result in default.
No criminal convictions for which a Pardon has not been granted (a copy of the Pardon is required). No Criminal charges pending before the courts.
Must hold current Standard First Aid and CPR (Level “C”) Certification.
Desirable Qualifications for Applicants
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Good interpersonal skills.
Be knowledgeable of and sensitive to First Nations Culture.
Step 1 – The Application Process
The application process for the police recruit competition requires the submission of multiple forms.
A Resume with a Cover Letter must be submitted along with the completed Employment Application form.
The employment application package must also include:
A certified Driving Record Abstract with driving information for the last three years. Out of town applicants must supply their provincial equivalent
Copy of High School Diploma
Certified copy of High School Transcript
Post- Secondary Documents (if applicable)
Copy of valid Certificate of Standard First Aid and CPR level “B”
Copy of Birth Certificate and/or Canadian Citizenship or Legal Permanent Resident Documentation.

Applications must be complete before the applicant will be considered for advancement in the competition.
Step 2 – The SIGMA
Suitable applicants may be invited to write the SIGMA exam. Applicants must pass this exam to remain in the selection process.
The SIGMA Survey for Police Officers is an assessment for screening job applicants for the position of police officer. It is a written exam consisting of 74 questions that must be answered in 35 minutes. The exam consists of job-relevant questions that test spelling, vocabulary, mathematics, and problem solving abilities.
The SIGMA is a pass/fail result.
Applicants must successfully pass the SIGMA exam to proceed in the competition.
Step 3 – Police Officer’s Physical Abilities Test (P.O.P.A.T)
All candidates are required to successfully complete a physical abilities test to proceed in the competition.
The selected test is the POPAT. It consists of an obstacle course that the applicant must complete within 4 minutes and 15 seconds. The POPAT is a pass/fail step. Candidates are not ranked according to the time taken to complete the POPAT.
Prior to the POPAT, all candidates will be allowed to view and try out the equipment for the test. The POPAT tester will walk the candidates through the course so they fully understand how the course is run. Candidates may ask questions at this time.
There are no allowances made for age or gender differences between candidates.
The results will be immediately available to you on completion of the test.
Step 4 – Interview
Candidates will be interviewed by a selection panel consisting of the Chief of Police, a Corporal and/or a Constable. The interview will examine a number of job dimensions related to this position.

Our Guiding Principles:

Successful candidates will be ranked and will move forward to the polygraph/ background investigation.
Unsuccessful candidates will not proceed in the competition.
Step 5 – Pre-screening interview and Polygraph
The Personal Disclosure Form will be completed by the applicant.
The applicant will be submitted to a pre-screening interview, and a pre- employment polygraph examination.
The polygraph investigation will test for detected and undetected crime. The test results are confidential.
Successful applicants will move forward to the background investigation portion of the selection process.
Step 6 – Background investigation
Suitable applicants undergo a thorough background investigation where employment history, character, credit, and security are examined. The result of this investigation is confidential.
Offer of employment
An official offer of employment will be made to successful applicants. This offer is contingent on a medical examination and being found medically fit, as well as having and maintaining an RCMP Security Clearance.
Newly hired Constables are required to attend and successfully complete the Recruit Training Class at the Saskatchewan Police College. Graduates of recruit training work with experienced officers during six months of field training and remain on probation for one year.
